History

A tropical wave came off of Africa on August 14 and soon became Tropical Depression Six at 18:00 on August 16. At 12:00 UTC on August 17, it strengthened into Tropical Storm Fiona, after an ASCAT pass revealed tropical storm force winds were present. Following on August 18 it had strengthened to its first peak intensity of 50 mph and continued northwest. Fiona weakened slightly on August 19 as it emerged into more unfavorable conditions, but on August 20, an ASCAT pass revealed winds as high as 47 kt. As a result, Fiona reached its second peak intensity of 50 mph around this time. Fiona continued to battle strong wind shear and dry air, and dissipated on August 23 without ever impacting land. Fiona's remnants were absorbed by a circulation that eventually developed into Tropical Depression Eight.
